Happy Birthday, MJ

Today, my handsome son turns 22! I can't believe the years have gone by that fast. Seems like just yesterday, he was holding my hand to cross the street. Now, he is student teaching and about to graduate from college. He is also engaged to a beautiful young lady and will be getting married this summer.

So, today, I just want to wish him HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! and tell him I AM PROUD OF YOU!!

Lately, I have been obsessed with Awareness Ribbons. This is a project I have wanted to do for a while now. My life has been effected by so many issues. Several of my friends are Breast Cancer Survivors. I have a young lady in my life who is a survivor of Childhood Lukemia. I have other friends who have served our country in the Armed Forces. I have friends who have been touched by Domestic Violence. And my own family has been touched by Animal Abuse. I have wanted to make collars for our fur-babies to help bring awareness to these causes.

But, it wasn't until a fellow beader asked me to create a collar for her to support Breast Cancer Awareness and Relay for Life that I actually got a start on the project. I did two versions of the Small Awareness Ribbon Collar Motif and posted the pattern last week. Because the small collars come in two lengths, the pattern includes 4 versions. I did both lengths in both loom and peyote stitch. Something for everyone.

Then, my future daughter-in-law's Mom saw the photos of the collars that I posted on Facebook and asked me to make a version for her "little boy" Max to wear. So this is the collar I created for him.

I didn't want the medium sized fur-babies to be left out. So I went on the create and post the patterns for the Medium Awareness Ribbon Dog Collar Motif. This pattern also includes both the loom and peyote versions of a short and long medium dog collar. That is 4 patterns in one. I decided to stitch this one as a yellow ribbon collar to support our troops.

And now, I am starting on the large versions of the collar. After all, Tanner is considered a large dog. This one is for my future daughter-in-law's dog, Moocow. She wanted pink ribbons with the purple relay background.

But for Tanner, I am going to do Purple Ribbons on a yellow background. I want his collar to support the Prevention of Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence. These two causes have really impacted our life in the past month. I'll keep you posted as I get the large versions done and posted.

Update on Tanner

Tanner went to the vet last Wednesday to have his stitches removed and to get his annual physical. He weighs 76 lbs and, according to the Vet, is in perfect health. His ear infection is even cleared up.

Now, we just need to get the scabs on the side of his face healed up. We are washing his face twice a day with mild oatmeal puppy shampoo.

And he also needs a bath, badly. But the groomer can't fit him in until Thursday, so I am toweling off his paws after each play session. We have had a lot of mud and rain here lately.

Thanks everyone for your prayers and well wishes for my boy. We celebrated our first "Gotcha Day" on Saturday. And I do mean Celebrated. It was a great time!!

Catching up & Sale Time at Bead Patterns Boutique

Sorry I have not posted for the past several days. We had an emergency here that has kept me pretty busy. My beautiful Golden Retriever, Tanner, was attacked by another dog on our Sunday evening walk. My husband and I struggled and struggled to get the other dog off of him. Finally a neighbor came along and used a chain to get the dog to release. We believe that was what saved Tanner’s life.

We spent the next 7 hours at the ER Vet getting Tanner stitched up. Then we brought him home and have been giving him lots of TLC. If you want to see photos of his face, you can check out his blog: Tanner Trains the Family. The post on January 15 has the photos.

Tanner is doing a lot better now. The drains were removed yesterday and we are allowed to play with him as we normally do. But we are all still very scared, because that dog is still in the neighborhood. It belongs to a neighbor and we are working with the state dog warden to get it declared dangerous.

Thanks to all who have already sent ‘get well’ wishes. We appreciate your support.

Fireline tips and tricks

Yes, I have rethought working with the “F” thread. I needed to choose a thread for my new tea light cover that would not melt and was transparent. I had very few options. And the one that I settled on was Fireline.

In my past experience with the thread, I had faced a lot of tangles and knots. I am also an avid hand quilter, and I remembered a technique I use with quilting thread that helped with the Fireline.

I had thought because this Fireline was a fishing line, it would not have a “direction” to it. But it does. When I take thread from a spool to hand quilt, I thread the needle and use the thread the same way that it comes off of the spool. In other words, my knot (in my quilting thread) goes on the end closest to the place where I cut the thread from the spool.

When I applied this technique to my Fireline… Well, it made all the difference in the world!!!

One thing I noticed right away was that the thread is stiffer than Nymo (duh!). But that fact kept it from getting caught on things as I worked.

And it also made it harder to tear out when I made a mistake. But I guess that is the point. I am not supposed to make mistakes !!

I also noticed that the finished piece was straighter than pieces I had done with Nymo. Usually the Nymo pieces curved into a slight rainbow shape, but the Fireline piece did not.

I also tried doing some Brick stitch with the thread.

The first thing I notice was that my ladder stitches stayed close together and even.

But, when I tried to work the first row on top and bottom of the set-up row, I did have some problems slipping the needle under the threads between the beads.

My conclusion: Fireline is not all that bad to work with. It has it’s place and uses in my bead box. It will not longer be banned or bad-mouthed by me. I have always said, use the right tool for the right job and you will get a good result. Fireline will now be my tool for tea light covers and transparent projects.

I don’t think I will use it for fringe work, though. It is just too stiff.

Re-thinking Fireline

From the first time I tried Fireline, I Hated it! My first project using Fireline became so hopelessly tangled and tied in knots that I swore I would never us it again!

I have since learned… Never say Never! Usually, when I have done that in the past, something forces me to do what I said I would not do.

That was the case here too!!

Little did I know that my Daughter becoming a pastry chef would inspire/cause me to use the dreaded “F” thread again.

Meghan loves to make pastries. She and I like to make cupcakes. They are easier to eat at a party and go faster than a cake usually does. We have seldom had to bring any home from any place we took them.

But how many can you eat?? I know, some will have not problem. But me, they go right to my waist and hips. So I decided to make a tealight cover so I could have cupcakes around all the time.

With all the wonderful fragrances in candles now, I can even have these smell like cupcakes if I choose.

The problem is… I needed a thread that would not melt but was still transparent. The choice was obvious. I had to try working with Fireline again.

As you can see, I was successful. And I learned a few things along the way.

Tommorow, I’ll share some tips I learned from re-thinking Fireline.

Projects in Progress

It has been a busy beginning for the New Year here at Bouncing Wolf Creations. Last time I posted, I told you about several goals that I am setting for 2012. I am well under way working to meet them.

My first ornament for 2012 is ……… Well, I am still working on a name, but here is a photo to whet your appetite.

Oh, and I have two more in the works.

This one is inspired by a Native American Nation’s Flag. I can’t wait to do the fringe work. I have such plans!!

And there are two more stilling on the beading table as charts. It should be a great year.

I have also started a new collection. What do you think I am going to do with these??? Hang around and see.

I also have several new collars already listed, and several more in the works.

I just wish there were more hours in the day. I have more ideas than time to stitch.

New Year, New Goals

First, I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I heard someone say recently that the only difference between 11:59 pm on 12/31 and 12:00 am on 1/1 is one minute. These minutes happen every day, all day long. It is us who are different. Some of us just choose this time to make a change.

I had a very long, sometimes painful year last year. I didn’t do a lot of beadwork, or knitting or quilting. I did a lot of baking. I didn’t post to this blog regularly, but I did try really hard to keep up with my puppy’s blog “Tanner Trains the Family”.

I changed, as a person during 2011. And I must say, I think I am better for the experience.

I am not one to make Resolutions. These are just promises that are easily broken.

I set Goals and spend the year chasing and achieving them.

So, you may ask, what are my beading and crafting goals for this 2012?

1) Learn to make Lampwork beads.

I have ALWAYS wanted to do this. But to tell you the truth, I was a bit afraid that I might burn myself. I am the kind of person who needs to touch everything and I was afraid that I might do that with this craft.

I also saw a lady in EPCOT making some wonderful beads and I decided I HAD to confront my fears.

I did some research, and found a class close to home. On February 25, I will be having my first class. I am sure I will be hooked and bring home some new tools. I’ll keep you posted on that. But for now, CHECK!

2) Create One (1) new Holiday Ornament Pattern each month. They may not all be ornament covers. Some may be flat, some may be dimensional. But I am setting a goal to create one a month. You will be happy to know that I have one ready to write the pattern, one in the beading stage and one on paper. A pretty good start!

3) Learn at least one new stitch this year and create patterns in that stitch.

I am still trying to decide if that stitch will be herringbone or RAW. I may have to try both before I see which I like better and which stimulates my muse to design. But I still have a bit of time for that.

4) Spend more time on this blog. I want to share my journey with you. I want to share the things I learn and my experiences. So you will see me here once or twice a week. That is my goal.

Oh, and one other thing I forgot to mention. I have recently opened a “Collar Me Urs” on Artfire. I am offering handmade, customized and personalized pet collars and patterns for pet collars there. If your fur-baby needs some new bling, please feel free to drop by.

A New Project

Today, I got to go out to lunch with my dear “sister” and my beautiful daughter. We enjoyed a great meal of Chinese food, and then we headed across the plaza to check out the local Thrift Shop! This is something that the three of us love to do. It is like going on a huge treasure hunt. And boy, did I find treasure today.

I found this beautiful, lined leather blazer. At a bargain price of $10.99. The zipper is in perfect shape, the lining is impecable and it fit me to a “T”. The only problem is:

Both cuffs appear to have some sort of a tape like residue on them.

But, instead of seeing this as a problem, I am seeing it as a project. I have some beadwork in mind to cover this and create a one-of-a-kind piece.

I hope to start the beadwork tonight or tomorrow. I’ll keep you posted.

Stormy’s New Collar

I went to visit my friends last evening and gave them Stormy’s new collar. Doug liked it so much, he put it on her right away.

I, like a dumby, forgot to take my camera along. So Jamie was kind enough to send me some photos to share with you.

Oh, and by the way, I got plenty of kisses, and got to do lots of petting with the sweet little girl.

Update!

Life has been a bit crazy at my house this week. My 8-month-old Golden Retriever, Tanner, has had an upset tummy. My 18-year-old daughter, Meg, has also been dealing with some dehydration and exhaustion. And my husband has been dealing with some ongoing health issues. And I have been busy taking care of all of them.

It hasn’t left a lot of time for beading. But I wanted to do a “thank you” gift for a friend who watched Tanner last monday so that I could go to an amusement park with my family.

My friend, Doug, has a Boston Terrier pup. She is a bit younger than Tanner, but not much. I looked her up on my “collar sizes chart” and they suggested a 15 to 18 inch collar. So I started there.

I knew that I wanted to put her name on it too. And this is what I came up with for that part.

For a motif, I chose:

Lightening Bolts

And for my pattern model:

I thought this little guy looked cute.

I named the pattern “Stormy – A Lightening Bolt Dog Collar Motif”

Well the gift is wrapped now and ready to be given. Hopefully tomorrow I can post a photo of the collar on Stormy!

Operation Baby Spoon Update

I have also been working on the Baby Spoon project as time allows. Here is what I have done so far.

I like the look of the piece, but before I write up the instructions, I want to try a sample with tablecloth vinyl and a non-water soluble glue. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Operation: Baby Spoon

Some of you may remember about a week ago, one of the members of the Bead Patterns Boutique Forum Group, Carol, was asking about a gift for a nine-month-old granddaughter. The group suggested that she try a beaded baby spoon handle.

Well, my muse heard this and was off to the races. In the midst of my studio reorganization, I started working on some ideas that might work.

I must say, it has been trial and error.

My first step was to go to Walmart and look for baby spoons. I had three criteria in mind:

1) pick a brand that would be easy for people to get all over the country (i.e. it had to be a big name brand)

2) It had to be age-appropriate for the baby

3) the shape of the handle had to be easy to work with.

These are the two that I decided to bring home. Both fit the age criteria. The one on the left is distributed by Walmart, so I thought it would be pretty accessible and the one on the left is by Gerber. I don’t think you can get much more well known in the baby world than that name. I like the shape of the handles on the ones on the left the best, but I decided to give both a try. Also notice, the ones on the left are a set of spoon and fork. That was a plus in my book.

I sent photos of the spoon that I had chosen to Carol to ask for her input. She mentioned that she like the ones with the colored bowls the best, so I decided to start with those.

From past experience, I know that it is easier to bead around a smooth object if you first cover it with either leather, ultra suede, felt of another material. So, I covered the handle with some grey felt. I am not sure that I would use this method in my final version. I am not sure how the felt will hold up under washing. I am thinking that a table cover plastic might be a better choice and a non-water soluble glue would be a good choice. But this gave me a place to start.

Then I started beading. I am trying to coordinate with my “Sweet Sentiments Pen Wraps”, so I chose a white background and I am working in Tubular Even Count Peyote. (I have a tutorial available here).

These handles are pretty tapered, so they do require an increase from time to time. But with the heart motif that I have chosen to use, I am able to camouflage it pretty well.

As you can see, I still have a long way to go. But my muse and I are getting along really well. We are having a great time exploring the possibilities. Hopefully, I will have this pattern done within the next week.

Fine Tuning and Problem Solving

Most of the major sorting of my studio has been done. Now it is time to fine tune the organization.

Most of the items in my studio have been grouped and put in to drawers (an in some cases, piles) Now it is time to sort out the drawers and reorganize them.

Last night I made a trip to Staples and bought these:

This is two sets of customizable draw organizers. I did not have a coupon for these, but they were pretty reasonable. I paid under $25.00 for the whole mess (funny I should choose that word, hugh?)

And this morning, I started to work on some of the drawers.

Here is what that first drawer looks like after I started using the organizers.

I still have a few pieces left over. I am sure they will all get used before the project is completed.

Tomorrow is my shopping day away from home. I plan to check out the shoe organizers and see what I can do with the Stablilizers and maybe even loom storage.

This afternoon, my Muse started taking over and for the first time in a very long time, I cut out some fabric to do some sewing. It may have to do with the fact that I bought some new pins.

I don’t know how many of you remember, but my Tigger, my golden lab, was famous for eating my pins. I have been so scared that Tanner will do the same thing. I have not been able to sew for months. But, I think I have come up with a solution.

These are the pins that I have been using for about 5 years now. They are very fine and very small. And they have very little heads. They are pretty easy to drop and even harder to find on my grey carpet. I always thought I was super careful with them, but Tigger proved me wrong.

These are the pins that I bought yesterday. They are not as fine (which could be a problem for some fabrics), they are much longer and they have colored heads. I should be able to keep track of these pins much easier.

So, today, I boxed up the old silk pins, taped the box tightly shut, and put it in a storage drawer that houses my pins and needles. And I started sewing again!!! I feel so much better.

The Adventure Continues

Well, what you saw yesterday was the south side of my room. Before you get jealous of the space, I must tell you, this was my kids school room up for almost 10 years. It started out full of desks and bookshelves for homeschooling. My sewing machine was stuck in a small corner so that I could occasionally sneak in some sewing while they were working on assignments.

As the years have passed, they have needed the room less and less and now they are both in College, so they don’t need it all. I have been able to expand and use the whole room.

I am what my family calls a “garbage picker”. Most of the furniture in the room has come from discount piles, newspaper adds, thrift shops or super coupons at stores. Even my sewing machines are floor models, so I save there too!!

I know that I am blessed to have this space and be surrounded by all the memories while I work. And I also know I should take better care to keep it cleaner.

Well, here is the work that I got done today.

This is what the North West corner of the room looked like this morning. As I said before, I just seem to have a lot of stuff out of place. Clothes don’t need to be here. I have a closet space under the stair well. And, would you believe there is a sewing machine under that pile? Don’t worry, it is not my embroidery machine. And it is covered, so it will not get damaged. It is my daughter’s and this was her sewing space when she had an interest in sewing. Now, she has an interest in having me sew for her. So, this is what that space looks like now.

The clothes and empty hangers, which I do use, are all in the closet space under the stairwell. The shoe rack that was hidden behind the clothes is now being used to organize my blank dog collars. They are all sorted by size and labeled!! And the unused sewing machine is neatly stored under the table, and my serger is now in it’s place!!! I now pronounce this a usable space!

This is my next target area. This is my fabric stash (or at least most of it). As you can see, it is already in drawer units, so it should be pretty easy to go through. The real issue is the piles on the top!!! That has to go!!! I am looking at some options for storing the stabilizers a bit more efficiently. I am thinking about these:

But the store that sells them is 30 minutes away. I am heading to that part of the world on Wednesday, and of course, I have a coupon!! So I will be checking them out. I’ll let you know how I make out.

Freeing my Muse

Here are some shots of the space that I lovingly call “My Studio”.

This area… well, what can I say. It is a disaster. A mixed up mess of things!!! It includes a 4-drawer metal file cabinet, some a book shelf with fabric, some plastic stacking bins full of regalia supplies, a cart with my photo printer/scanner on the top and who knows what inside, another bookshelf full of…. junk, oh, and a futon! Yikes!

And this is the opposite side of the room. This is one of my three cutting tables. They are supposed to be used for cutting fabric. Good luck with that the way things are now!

Oh, and this is the space under the table. Yes, I use it for storage, but really?? This is just a cluttered mess.

I am sorry to say, I don’t have a photo of my beading table from before I decided to reorganize. I just really got inspired and started to fix things up yesterday morning and I didn’t think to take “before” photos of that area.

I found, when I started yesterday morning, that I had so many of the same type of things in different places. I decided to start with grouping like items together and putting them in the same place.

This piece of furniture is affectionately known as “the white dresser”. I started here. As you can see, I have put labels on the drawers now.

One of the first things that I discovered was that I had glues, tapes, sprays, hooks and magnets in so many places all over the room!! It is no wonder I could not find the tape that I needed or the hook.

But now, I can. They are all in this drawer. Glue gun, masking tapes, glues, packing tapes….. easy to find!

Here’s another label that eliminated three of my storage boxes.

All of my shawl fringe, leather lacing, greek thong, and kumihimo cords are safely stored together now (along with a fan handle that I painted and did not really know where else to store it)

Well, this is what my beading table looks like Now!

I know it is probably hard for you to tell, but I do have a lot more space. The carousel in the center used to sit in the middle of my work space. Now, thanks to some reorganizing, it sits back by the wall out of the way.

And my letter sorter trays, now actually are sorting things I need!! Not just miscellaneous scraps of paper.

I changed some of the storage under this table too!! I discovered that I am not the type of person who works well with stacked storage boxes. Even if I can see what is in them, I am not very likely to move the stack to get the items in the bottom boxes. And I am less likely to put things away. I need drawers and shelves. I was lucky enough to find the metal corner units at a yard sale and I got the drawer units at a really great price. I used my label maker to label each drawer.

After several hours of cleaning this morning, this is what the front corner of the room looks like now. I know there is still a lot of stuff. But now, I can get to everything. Nothing is piled in front of anything else. Oh, and the wooden cart is gone!!! The reorganization left room for the printer on the black bookshelf.

And here is my cutting table!!! Yes, I think I could actually cut some fabric today!!! But, I think I will finish the beaded necklace that is laying on the board right now.

And now, the storage space under the table actually looks like more organized!!! I am so very happy!!

This is the stack of storage boxes (the ones with the blue lids) that I reorganized into the drawer units! I will probably repurpose these in the garage for some of the seasonal baking stuff that Meg and I have.

This small collection of items along with a medium sized box and a rack of paint are going to a friend who is also very creative and can make better use of them than I can right now!

Tanner is happier too! He has more room to play!!!

Variations

A good idea is just that—a good idea! ‘Till you do something with it. Inspiration strikes and I love to run with it. I love a challenge. I love the feeling of accomplishment that comes with creating.

As you know, my latest obsession is Dog Collars. I have done 12 different patterns. Each pattern can be used to create a custom length collar for your fur-baby. However, I noticed that one thing was missing. Each pattern was designed to only one width of collar.

So, my latest challenge is to adapt the patterns to fit the other sizes.

The first one that I completed is a narrow version of “Gabe”. If you remember, “Gabe” was designed for a three-year-old Golden Retriever. It was done on a 1 inch wide leather collar.

About a week ago, I had a friend ask me if I could make this collar to fit a Chihuahua. After doing some research on the breed and having her get a measurement of the dog, I created this:

This version fits the 3/8 inch nylon collar that will adjust to fit the 9 inch diameter of this puppy’s neck.

I have been working on variations of my other patterns too. So if you see something you like on my Dog Collars page, but the width isn’t want you are looking for, please send me an e-mail and I will get a version ready for you.

Converting

I guess not everyone is as much in love with their beading looms as I am. I have been working on so many collars on my loom that it has become my best friend. But not everyone enjoys loom work.

So, I have decided to convert some of my collar patterns to be done in other stitches.

This is my “Summer Picnic” dog collar pattern. This is the narrow version that will fit a 5/8 inch wide collar. I have already designed a wider version for one inch collars, but now, I am working to re-design the pattern in 2-drop Peyote stitch.

I’m not 100% happy with this one yet. I like the shapes, but I think I want to go a bit wider. So, I tore that strip apart and made this one.

That’s much better. Now to turn it into a collar band or bracelet.

New Collars

Summer is coming. I have been promised that by the weather man. I sort of believe it. We had a taste the other day.

And I got inspired. I sat down at my computer and designed several new collar motifs for Tanner to show off this summer.

This one is named “Stars and Stripes”. It has a real, patriotic, Americana feel. I love the two shades of blue in the spinning stars and the red and white stripes in the background. I attached it to a 1 inch wide collar because Tanner growing so fast.

And this one is named “Summer Picnic”. I must confess, I used a collar that Tanner had been wearing until he grew into his leather collar that I gave him for his birthday. But, I must say, I think it really dressed the collar up. I think he will wear this one for our next summer picnic. I can taste the watermelon already.

The third one that I finished recently is named “Gabe”. It is inspired by a beautiful, athletic Golden Retriever who is owned by Tanner’s and my favorite dog trainer. I designed this collar motif to match a hand braided leather leash that Gabe wears when he competes. It was a big hit with his owner.

Beading time

Tanner and I had a busy weekend with family. He was pretty tired on Monday, so I had some time to bead.

Here’s how he spent most of the day!

And here’s what I did:

I worked on beading some new dog collars! I have the beaded bands glued to the collars. They need to set up overnight. Tomorrow, I will stitch them. Then I need to get the patterns ready to publish. I can’t wait to see Tanner wearing these. He looks so cute in his birthday collar. Everyone loves seeing his name when they meet him.

I have several more ideas that I want to set up and bead. I want him to have a collar for every season!!!

Peanut Butter Eggs

Yes, I did do some beading today. But nothing “exciting”. I have been remaking the piece that I had the accident with earlier this week. The band is done, now I am attaching the backing.

To take a break, I decided to fulfill a promise to my family and revive an old tradition. I made home-made peanut butter eggs.

Here is the gooey filling. It is just cream cheese, butter, chunky peanut butter and powdered sugar. Lots and lots of calories. Luckily enough, my stand mixer is strong enough to blend all of that together. Could you imagine mixing that by hand.

Cookie scoops are not just for cookies. I use mine to portion cupcakes/muffins and also to portion out the filling for the peanut butter eggs.

The scooped portions get rolled into egg shapes and then they go into the freezer. If I am in a hurry, they only need about two hours to freeze. But I had time, so they stayed in the freezer over night.

This morning, I got out my chocolate melter and …. well you know what that does.

And with Tanner looking on anxiously, (the last thing I made was cookies for him) I began to dip the eggs.

I took me just over an hour to dip all 56. I started by dipping them from the end. As you can see here, those are not as pretty. But my daughter taste tested for me and said they still taste good.

Then I remembered to dip them from the top and they finished great. Hope your weekend is a sweet as mine is going to be. Give into a little temptation this weekend and enjoy.

Be Careful Where you Cut

I have been working on a new dog collar band. It was inspired by a beautiful hand-made leather leash that Tanner’s trainer uses for her Golden Retriever when he competes.

The color is made from braided leather thong in a beautiful shade of green with black as in interwoven accent. I tried to mimic the pattern for a coordinating collar, and this is what I came up with.

I had the strip all beaded and was working on applying the backing yesterday. I used a heavy weight interfacing and black Nymo 0 thread.

As I was trimming away the excess backing, that is when “tragedy” happened. I trimmed too close and caught the warp thread!! Yikes!!

Needless to say, I will be remaking this piece. I tried to reinforce it, but I am just not comfortable with the idea. I want it to be perfect!! But I think this piece will get set aside to be taken apart a bit later. I think I’ll just start from scratch today!

The moral of the story: Be careful where you Cut!!

Using my Embroidery Machine

I know that most of you drop by to see what I am beading or creating with my beads. But today, I want to share another of my creative pursuits with you. I actually am lucky enough to own two sewing machines with embroidery capabilities. They are older machines, but the both still work very well. My first and oldest is a Viking Designer 1. I use that one primarily for sewing because it just seems to do that best.

My other machines is a Brother Pacesetter ULT2003D. Yes, it is one that came with the built in Disney designs and handles the Disney cards. I have done a lot of Disney stuff for my family on it.

As many of you also know, I adopted a Golden Retriever puppy three months ago. He has been taking a lot of my time to train. But it has been worth it. Now, I want to show him and my love for him to the world. And I also want him to get used to the noises that happen in my work room. I decided it was time to run the embroidery machine.

I got a GREAT buy on some sweatshirts and t-shirts on the clearance rack, and this is what I did with them.

I found this blue hooded sweatshirt for $3.00. I decided to do the same design on the front and on the back. Luckily, I was able to get it in two sizes.

I put this beautiful face on the front of a grey sweatshirt. I wore this one to puppy class already.

I have several more designs that I am hoping to find the right garments to display them. And I have several more grey sweat shirts waiting to be made into custom garments. So, guaranteed, Tanner will hear the embroidery machine a lot more.

By the way, if you are wondering how he did. I don’t think he even noticed that it was running.

Just wanted to share a photo of Tanner that I had taken yesterday at the local pet shop. They do these to benefit local animal charities. I think he did really well for being only 5 months old. I know it will be a memory that I will treasure forever.

Cam-E-Ohhhh’s!

Many of you know that one of the other beading techniques that I enjoy is bead embroidery. I love to start with some focal pieces and bead bezels around them. Then, I add patterns and other fun pieces to make a great pin or medallion for a bag.

This is a brooch that I made for my daughter.
It all started with a wooden peace sign button.

This is a cuff that I worked on last year. It features some great Halloween buttons that I found.

And this is a bag that I started with the beautiful stone and allowed the pieces to speak to me. The back of the bag and the flap are one piece of leather and the front is rabbit fur.

While I have been able to find a lot of great stones and buttons, I have not been able to find nice cameos to work with. While I was checking out some of my friends’ blogs the other day, I came across some beautiful cameos that had been bezeled by Lori Cook. My package arrived yesterday and these are my new Cameo’s. I am very pleased with what I got. My daughter has already laid claim to the butterfly cameo. But, in true teen-age fashion, she is leaving it up to me to make it into a piece of jewelry for her.

Now, all I have to do if figure out what to do with them. Stay tuned and see what happens.

Contemplating Cat Collars

I will freely admit that I know almost nothing about cats. In fact, I am allergic to them. That being said, I have been asked by some fellow beaders to design cat collars. So today I started doing some research.

I do know that cat collars need to be “break away”. I am not 100% sure why. I just know they do. So, I can’t use a dog collar for a cat.

I started at the dollar store. I found some really ugly cheap things there. Most of them were covered with rhinestones. I knew I could not use those to bead on, so I kept looking.

Then, I found these:

The bell on the collar gave me a clue that it was supposed to be for a cat. That seems to be the other thing that all cat collars have in common. This one is 9/16th inches wide and can adjust from 7 inches to 12 inches. I bought this one and one in black.

Then I went to the grocery store. I know, a crazy place to look for a cat collar, but we have some pretty well stocked shops around here and I have found some unique items in them.

I found this one there:

This one is 7/16th inches wide and can be adjusted from 8 inches long to 12 inches long. And it says right on the buckle “Safe Cat”. Oh, and it has the bell too.

So, now I need to figure out which size is used more commonly by cat owners. If you have a cat, I would appreciate a comment with the width that you use. It would really help me with my research.

I have some design ideas in the works, but I just need to get the width right before I start to bead.

Dog Collars

I know I have been very quite to a while. Life and loss have really hit me hard. But through it all, I have come out with a new beading obsession.

I have a new puppy.

This is Tanner Charles Rudy. He is an AKC Golden Retriever. As of Saturday, he will be 20-weeks old. He came into my life at a very dark time, and brought a lot of sunshine and inspiration.

With my last dog, I was obsessed with bandannas. But with Tanner, I wanted something different. For Tanner, I have been designing and making beaded Dog Collars. Here are some of my designs to date.

I tried to design patterns with a motif that could be repeated in such a way that you could customize the length of your collar to fit your Fur Baby. Some of the patterns even include an Alphabet to help you personalize the collar.

This is my first attempt at a leather collar. Of course, I had to do this one for my little guy. He is not quite big enough to wear it yet, but if he keeps growing as quickly as he is, it won’t be long.

And this one is the most recent one. I bought this pink collar with another project in mind. But I picked up the wrong size and it was to short for the beaded band. It sat on the design table for a week or so, just staring at me and daring me to do something feminine. Never having had a female dog, I was at a loss for a name. I asked some friends to help me. Carol DeLong came up with the name I chose: “Hearts n Lace I Am”.

Sometimes, you just need something quick & easy....

As much as I love to do the complicated things, to push the limits, to be innovative and creative; there are times when I just need to do something simple.

There are times when I just need to get in there, work on the project and complete it in a short period of time. Sometimes I just need the feeling of accomplishment that a finished project brings.

Other times, I need a quick gift for a friend. I love to make hand-made items to give to family and friends to celebrate special occasions, but I must admit that sometimes I am pressed for time and just need something that will work up quickly.

Oh, and did I mention that it is a bonus when the piece really looks good??? Here is an example of my latest quick & easy piece which I think has some great impact.

Wolf Tracks Earring

These earrings are done in a simple brick stitch design with a simple fringe pattern. They work up very quickly and easily.

But, I must confess, these are a gift that I am giving to myself. I can't bear to part with this pair. I think it goes so well with my matching cuff, business card holder, and lighter cover, and bangle. This one is going in my jewelry box. But I will be posting the pattern soon.

My new "Even Count Tubular Peyote Stitch Tutorial

This week I found out how well I know Even Count Tubular Peyote stitch. I spent the better part of the week writing a step-by-step tutorial for this stitch and discovered some things about myself in the process.

No matter how well you think you know how to do something, I believe that you don't really know it well until you try to break it down to teach it to someone else.

When you try to put a process on paper, illustrate each step so that everyone can understand it, describe the process in words, photos and diagrams, then it becomes a part of you.

Sometimes it is amazing to me how hard it is to explain something that I have done so many times to someone who has never done it before. Things that I can do without thinking I have to take apart mentally and try to display on a page. In fact, I found myself having to do a project as I created the tutorial so that I was sure I did not miss a step.

It was a good experience for me. A lot came out of it. The obvious thing is the new "Even Count Tubular Peyote Stitch Tutorial" that I now have posted on the sites where I offer my patterns. But during the process, I also learned how to compress photos with my publishing software, and which pdf publisher would give me the easiest pdf for other to download.

I also learned how to use some new "widgets" on http://www.beadpatternsboutique.com/ to give my fellow beaders some customized features when the choose my patterns.

My new Beaded Hair Stick

I also created a new pattern for a Beaded Hair Stick. The complete pattern, including the instructions for making a point on the stick and adding the beads at the top, are included with the new tutorial.

Oh, yes, and I even found some time for beading. Check out the new pieces that I have been working on.

Bangles & Bracelets

I have been hard a work creating a selection of beaded decorations for your wrist. I love to make cuff-style bracelets. In fact, the wider the better! Isn't that strange, because I have very small wrists. But rest assured, I have taken that into account with my creations. I have asked fellow designers and fellow beaders for input on length for these cuffs. Each one has instructions to help you adjust the size to fit your wrist or the wrist of the person that you might make one for.

Wolf Tracks Bangle Bracelet

As many of you know, my totem animal is the Wolf. I have a strong attachment to wolves and dogs of almost any breed. So making jewelry with any symbol that has to do with the beautiful, loyal animals is truely a "work of heart" for me.

My bangle bracelet series comes from my desire to do something different all the time. I have a hard time doing things over and over again. I like variety and change, so I decided to change my usual cuffs into a bangle. I tried several different materials to stiffen the beadwork into the bangle shape. I finally settled on a plastic tubing material. My patterns give the complete instructions for choosing the material and finishing the bangles, so I won't bore you with it here.

Wolf Tracks Cuff/Bracelet

But, I could not resist also creating a cuff/style bracelet from the same motif. This pattern also includes the instructions for making the toggle bead and the loop. It also has information to help you customize the size to fit your wrist.

Butterfly Bangle

This bangle is inspired by my beautiful daughter. Her native name is "Barefoot Butterfly". She is a fancy shawl dancer, and she hates to wear shoes, even in the snow. She loves anything with butterflies, so she spurs me on to create anything with butterflies. She helped me to test the size on the bangles, so I dedicate this piece to her. This pattern should be up on Tuesday morning.

Bear's Paw Cuff

Bears can be found on almost every continent. They are well respected everywhere, especially in North America where the native people they were once human. The Great Mystery is also believed to live in the spirit of the bear. (I should have this pattern ready by the end of the week)

Striped Bangle

For my next design, I decided to work in color that I LOVE. Purple is my color!! And yellow and green are the two colors that I like to put with my purples. I hope you like this one as much as I do. (This pattern should be ready to post by Tuesday 5/18)

I have serveral other ideas in the works, but no photos yet to share. Keep your eyes open for "Rose Trellis Bangle" and "Hearts Afire Bangle" coming later this month.

A New Angle on the Bangle

I know I have been a bit quite here for the past two weeks. We have had some illness sweep through, and then came the recovery period, quickly followed by the "increased creativity period". I must say, I don't look forward to illness or the recovery, but I do look forward to the increased creativity period.

It seems that whenever I get sick, my brain gets to hit it's re-set button. It dumps a lot of useless stuff that is just taking up space and it has room for a lot of new ideas.

That brings me to the title of this post "A New Angle on the Bangle". My recovering brain turned to creative thoughts of bracelets. I wanted to do something that was not a cuff for a change, so I found a "New Bangle".

What do you think????

So far, I have two finished. The blue one features my "Wolf Tracks" motif.

April Showers bring May Flowers....

But why should we wait? After all, we are beaders!! We can make our own flowers!!!

In celebration of the return of the robins, the blooming daffodils, and the buds on the trees, I have designed a set that I named:

Stained Glass Roses

I have already posted the pattern for a delicate, springy tea light cover that coordinates with the set.

Ring of Posies Tea Light Cover

The one page-pattern uses delica beads and cotton quilting thread to create a springy wrap for your tea lights. The pattern has a full-color graph style beading chart, a color key with suggested delica bead colors and bead counts and a color photo of the finished tea light.

Stained Glass Roses Earrings

I am planning to post the earring pattern next -- on Wednesday, April 7, 2010. The pattern will include the beading chart for the medallion and the tube bead, and complete directions for the fringe. The finished earrings are approximately 3.5 inches long (not including the french wire). And, yes, those are crystal bicones that you see in the fringe!!!

Stained Glass Roses Cuff/Bracelet

I am planning to post the Cuff/Bracelet pattern on Wednesday, April 14, 2010. This pattern will have all of the ususal features and will also include directions for adding a decorative button toggle clasp and loop.

The Barrette Pattern will complete the set and should be posted on Wednesday, April 21, 2010. The pattern will include the chart for the body of the barrette and the tube bead, and complete instructions for the new fringe design.

Every piece has a story....

Native Americans are storytellers. They grow up hearing stories told over and over again. Many of the stories are true, historical stories told to preserve the history and knowledge of the people.

Some of the stories are not true. But they tell of an event from a non-scientific perspective which can bring us understanding and healing.

Everything has a story. Rocks, trees, mountains, streams, animals and people all have a story to tell.

Even the jewelry that we make tells stories. How the piece was made is one story. The properties of the stones and metals that you choose to incorporate in the piece is another story. Even the animal images and decorative designs that you use can communicate a message.

We can connect with each other through the sharing of our stories. I think the key for us as jewelry makers is to find the best way to share these stories with our customers.

When I create a piece of jewelry, I try to learn the properties of the stones that I am using. I want to be sure that I use elements that are harmonious. When I put the item on my sale table, I display it with a card like this:

These cards tell the stories of the stones that I have incorporated in two of my wire wrapped pieces. (If you would like to see them, just click on the link below the photo).

When I design a beadweaving pattern, I also try to tell a story about the motifs that I choose. I include some of the information on the pattern itself. Some of the story also appears on the site where my pattern is displayed and still more of it will often appear here in my blog when I introduce a new piece.

Several of my fellow beaders have told me that they enjoy learning the stories of my patterns. If you enjoy the stories, I bet your customers would also enjoy hearing them. So why not share them?

Here are some ideas to help you share stories.

Make cards to use on your display so the piece can tell the story if you are working with another customer.
Make smaller cards to put in the package with the piece when you sell it. Then the customer can take the story with them.
Strike up a conversation with your customers when you see they are interested in a piece. If you have something special to tell them about that piece, it might make it even more appealing to them.

I hope this information will encourage you to tell the stories of your jewelry to your customers. Teach them and preserve the knowledge that we have as jewelry makers and human beings.

Native... in my heart!

I have been told that my family has Native American roots. But I have yet to be able to prove it. Although I have looked, the connection seems to ellude me. But, my Native American friends, tell me that is not just about my bloodline, but also about what is in my heart. And I can tell you, my heart is very native.

I live my life trying to make the smallest footprint possible. Ask my family, nothing in my house goes to waste. I save the smallest bits of fabric and leather. Stray beads are collected and used in collage pieces, and leftovers... well, I am the queen of "Let's see what happens when we mix this with this." Usually, we are not disappointed.

Well, in the Native community, everyone has a place and a purpose. And my "family" has put my beadwork skills to work. One of the projects that I am honored to do for my family members is a beaded feather quill.

Four Color Diamonds Feather Quill

I think I was asked to do my first one about two years ago. It was an Eagle Feather that had been gifted as an anniversary gift. The quill was very fragile and the couple wanted me to bead it to help protect it.

I wanted to be sure that I did it "right" so I started by doing research about beaded quills. I visited several native sites, and took my inspiration from their teachings.

I learned that the beadwork should reflect the individual. So I set about designing a pattern that represented my friends. I can't show photos of that feather here, because it would be disrespectful. But I can tell you that it incorporated the 4-colors of the Lakota Tradition (for the man) and a blue sky (for the lady).

Since then, I have done several others for family members, and I have designed a few that I have published as patterns. Here are three that I have available now. (please note: the feathers in these photos are all hand-painted reproduction feathers.)

Just one class...

That’s all it took for me to be hooked on yet another passion. As if quilting, sewing, beading and baking were not enough for one person. Now, I had found “WIRE WRAPPING” and I love it.

My teacher was a very patient lady and I was blessed to be the only one in the class. She was conservation minded, just like me, so she did not mind that I felt compelled to save every last scrap of the sterling silver wire that I had to cut off. She showed me a lot of pieces that she had done, then encouraged me to be creative.

Since then, I have gone on to wrap a lot more stones and create a lot more necklaces. If you were to ask me “Which comes first? the Pendant or the Necklace design?” I would tell you that 99.99% of the time it is the pendant that comes first. I love to collect beautiful stone. Some are semi-precious and some are not. As I make the pendants and necklaces, I try to learn something about the stones and their meanings and properties. I try to share that information when I share the pieces with others.

I am attracted to Tiger’s Eye and when I saw this beautiful 1.75 inch Tiger Iron donut with all of it’s added pink and peach colors, I had to wrap it. I used four strands of square sterling silver wire for the wrap and the bail accents.

Lapis Lazuli is a semi precious stone prized for its deep blue color. It is said to have the ability to increase the wearers psychic ability, virility and calm. It enhances creative self-expression, making it a great stone for teachers and speakers.

The pendant in this one-of-a-kind piece features a 1.5 inch Lapis donut wrapped in four strands of square sterling silver wire. The bail decorations include twisted wire rosettes, a sworovski crystal bicone and sterling silver beads.

The 20 inch necklace is strung on 19 strand nylon coated stainless steel wire and features 4mm and 8 mm Lapis beads, Czech glass beads, sterling silver spacers and a heart-shaped sterling silver toggle clasp.

Wolf Tracks Lighter Cover

Why would a person who does not smoke spend so much time creating beaded lighter covers? Good question. Here are my answers.

Lighters are a handy tool for everyone. They are not just for smokers.
A lot of people around me smoke and ask me for a light
If my lighter is has a beaded cover, I know it is mine. It's harder for someone else to pocket.
I can make an ugly lighter look a lot more attractive by beading the cover.

Lighters are not just for smokers. They are a useful tool. I use mine in my crafting. They are great for fusing a rope or cord, and they can also melt the cut end of a piece of ribbon to keep it from fraying. When we are camping, I use my lighter to light camp fires and citronella candles. And around my house, I use my lighter to illuminate the candles that I have all over the house. They are much easier to use than a pack of matches. So I like to keep them all over the house.

When I am at pow-wow's in the spring, summer and fall, I am surrounded by people who smoke. You would be surprised at how often I am asked for a "light". When I share my plain lighter, I often don't get it back. However, when I share a beaded lighter, I can very easily claim it as mine. Although I must admit that sometimes it makes it harder to get back because of the bead work.

March is "The Month of the Turtle"

Turtles are a symbol of both a beginning and an ending. You see, in order for something new to have room to grow, something must come to an end.

I hope that the new that starts to grow-- soon-- is the flowers, and the grass, and the leaves on the trees. And that the thing that comes to an end is the SNOW. I live in the North East and we have had way too much.

But I guess I should not complain too much. Being snowed in has given me a lot of creative time. I have a lot of new ideas in progress.

The first set that I would like to share with you is my "Turtle Tracks" set.

I just posted the new Lighter cover for sale. Here is a photo.

I personally love the leafy green fringe on the bottom of the lighter. One beader commented that it made it a bit more "girly".

I love the motif so much that I have designed an entire set of jewelry to go with it. Here are two of the other pieces that are coming.

I am also hoping to have a barrette to complete the set on March 24.

Catching Up! Quilting & Sewing Projects

The busy-ness of the "holiday season" has come and gone. I am one to make a lot of the gifts that I give to family and friends. I love the idea of truely giving of myself. And during the time that I spend making the gift, I think a lot about the person who will receive it. I would much rather spend time working in my work room than shopping at the crowded malls.

The only problem is, that in order to surprise people with their gifts, I really can't post photos of the finished projects on my blog. You can see who that could be a problem.

I have been working on some Lakota-style Star Quilts for my husband to use when he does his Vision Quest. I am not sure when that will be, but I need to get a start. Here are some photos of those pieces.

This is the top for the quilt he will use when he goes up on the mountain. It is 82 inches square. I have it marked with a Lakota hand-style quilting design and basted. Now to start quilting. It will take about two months.

This piece is for a special young friend who is having her first baby soon. In my opinion, she is a tennis star, so I used Tennis Raquet fabric as the theme. Because we were not 100% sure if the baby will be a boy or girl, I chose to use primary colors. This one is ready to wrap.

As I said, the Valentine's Day Gifts have also been handed out, so I can also show you some of them. This was my 20-year-old son's gift. It is a quilted, embroidered notebook cover.

My husband love to be in Walt Disney World. We always buy the mugs at the resort where we stay and we refill them during our visit. But sometimes carrying them can be a pain. I found a pattern for a Mug Carrier right before Christmas, but did not have time to make it then. We hope to be heading down this spring, so I decided to do this one for him for Valentine's day. I used Mickey fabric, because Mickey is one of his favorite characters.

My daughter, the budding pastry chef, got a new purse. I found the cupcake fabric in a remnant bin several weeks ago and knew that it was ment for her. She loves pink and butterflies, so this was perfect!

Well, I guess that is enough of my quilting/sewing projects for now. Tomorrow, I will update you on my beading.

And the Winner is....

Hi Ladies:

Thanks for all of the great ideas. You all saw those earrings in a different way and I really appreciated your input. I got 10 different suggestions. It was hard to choose, but the winner is.....

Oh, before I tell you that, I want to tell you the story of the Tube Beads. I know, some of you must think that I am obsessed with them. They are sort of a theme for me. But they come from a very real place and a need to create.

You see, last September, at a pow-wow, my husband gave me a gift. It was a beautiful sterling silver wolf pendant with dangling sterling silver feathers. But it had no chain. He gave it to me in a very romatic way. He bought it without me knowing and slipped it in my hand as he was walking me to the porta-potties. Yes, it was romantic because... well, just take my word for it. If you have ever camped at a native american pow-wow, you understand the need for some help sometimes to get safely to and from the porta-potties.

The thing was, the pendant had no chain. My husband had told me to "see what you can do with this" when he gave it to me, and I did not want to put this beautiful piece on just any silver chain. So, off I went to the local shop that had a good selection of Sterling beads. I chose 4 very large silver beads, a heart-shaped lobster claw clasp and some leather cord and went home to be creative.

Well, you can see the finished piece in the attachement or in my photo album on the group. I created the long and short tube beads and then adapted the long beads into the earrings. I wore them for the first time that October and got ohhhs and ahhhs from everyone. But this is the first time that I have made the pattern available.

I chose not to tell you that story till after you had given suggestions because I did not want to color your imagination with anything but the beads. And I think you were all very successful.

So without further ado.... The winner is .... Tammy U. with "Indian Summer". I love the name because it sums up not only the colors, but also the time of year that I created the piece and the time of year that I got the gift... and well, just too many things to tell.
